Search Emission Metrics

This tool returns emission metrics associated with your query. An emission metric is an estimate of a quantity of pollutant emitted within defined geographic, temporal, sectoral, and/or procedural boundaries. Air pollutant inventories, including those found in this Portal, typically feature the following parameters: Place (country or state/province/territory); Year (or range of years); Pollutant (or pollutant family); Source Category (or subcategory); and Estimation Methodology. Note: Fuel (another key parameter) is not included at this time, because it is not well-defined in the available inventories.

The parameters included in each inventory are shown in the Inventory Overview table below.

Select from the parameters below to refine your search. To ensure that your query returns results, refer to the Inventory Overview table to select parameters that are compatible with one another. Note: When selecting a Source Category or Estimation Methodology, we recommend that you click on the “i” icons for more information.

Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2012

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
April 2014

The Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks tracks the national trend in greenhouse gas emissions and removals back to 1990. The report contains total U.S. emissions by source, economic sector, and greenhouse gas. EPA uses national energy data, data on national agricultural activities, and other national statistics to provide a comprehensive accounting of total GHG emissions for all man-made sources in the United States.

Totals reflect net emissions (the sum of all sources minus the sum of all sinks). Emissions from the Memo Items source category, which covers fuel combustion from international transport activities, are not included in inventory totals.

Emission metrics by fuel type and for specific chemicals within the HFC and PFC pollutant families are not included in the portal, but may be added in the future.

Global Warming Potential (GWP) is an index that attempts to integrate the overall climate impacts of a specific action (e.g., emissions of CH4, NOx or aerosols). It relates the impact of emissions of a gas to that of emission of an equivalent mass of CO2.
