The North American Portal on Climate Pollutants, created and maintained by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), is designed to make data from air pollutant emissions inventories for Canada, Mexico and the United States comparable and easy for researchers and policy experts to use.
In building this web platform, the CEC sought to employ a new and dynamic approach to the comparison and distribution of air pollutant emissions inventory data. Funded through the CEC’s cooperative work program, the North American Portal on Climate Pollutants supports trinational collaboration on regional climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies by publishing emissions inventory data and related information, such as structured metadata and emission metrics, so that users can make informed comparisons of data sourced from disparate inventories.
The portal’s Data Dictionary enhances the ability to compare inventory data by creating a common framework for applying semantic tags to the data. The portal’s application programming interface (API) enhances the distribution of inventory data by making them available to researchers and application developers in JSON, XML, and CSV formats.
